Two postdoc positions for “DNP-enhanced NMR” both in the solid and liquid state are available immediately at the Solid State NMR group of the Institute of Molecules and Materials at the Radboud University of Nijmegen.
The solid NMR group at the Radboud University specializes in developing innovative technology to perform NMR spectroscopy on very small samples volumes both in the solid and in the liquid state. In the solid phase one can obtain ultrahigh proton decoupling fields (above 1 MHz RF field strength) improving the resolution to a few Hz at 20 T. Using on-chip NMR detection in a microfluidic environment we aim to resolve for example reaction pathways that are too fast for normal NMR. In this context we have started several new projects to improve the sensitivity by implementation of Dynamic Nuclear Polarization methods.
In collaboration with Agilent technologies and Bridge12 Technologies we are developing a solid state DNP setup at 600 MHz. The aim here is to combine the mMAS technology with DNP. The small sample size may allow lower temperatures and much higher microwave B1 field strengths.
In a second project we collaborate with various other groups in the university in an attempt to improve NMR detection sensitivity for the study of low concentration metabolites for example in screening for prostate cancer.
For both projects we are looking for enthusiastic postdocs that enjoys working in a challenging multidisciplinary environment. The postdoc candidate should hold a PhD in Physics or Chemistry. Hands-on experience in solid-state NMR or EPR spectroscopy with a track record in innovative method development is essential. Experience with DNP hardware is desirable. Actual building skills are highly appreciated. As most of the systems involve collaborations with other research groups, good communication skills are required.
The Institute for Molecules and Materials offers an exciting and stimulating research environment. State-of-the art solid-state NMR spectrometers operating at 300, 400, 600 and 850 MHz are available with the option to explore NMR options up to 1.3 GHz. 144 MHz Overhauser DNP spectrometer is operational, including options for rapid melt DNP, using an extended interaction klystron at 95 GHz as microwave source. A patented novel system for fast melt DNP is in operation. In this system the DNP takes place at cryogenic temperatures, while the NMR detection occurs in the liquid state using a highly efficient stripline NMR probe. A system for Overhauser DNP in the supercritical phase is under construction. A gyrotron source at 395 GHz will be installed in 2013.
The positions will be available for 2 years with the possibility of extension.
